Local Body Elections
In a 50 per cent poll of residents, Nelson's sitting Mayor, Mr D. N. Straw-bridge, was returned to office with a four to one majority over his mayoral opponent, Mr Leslie Myers, when the local body elections were held here last month. Three sitting councillors, Messrs L. Martin, L. Stollery and F. H. Sharland lost their seats and with the retirement of Mr S. A. Whitehead M.P, the council has four new members. These are Mrs B. R. Eyre, who has been elected deputy-Mayor, and Messrs P. S. Boyes, E. Pearce and R. G. Branford. Mrs Eyre was deputy-Mayor of the 1959-62 council, and Mr Pearce was also a member of that council.
In the Waimea county election the hydatids dosing dispute obviously played a large part in the rejection of all sitting members who were opposed. Only one county councillor (Mr G. E. Fry, Mo-tueka) was returned, and he was elected unopposed.
