Spotlight On The Council

On October 9, citizens of Nelson will cote for a city council which will control the civic destiny of Nelson for the next three years. At this time voters have the chance to either endorse the actions of councillors who are seeking re-election, or condemn them by electing candidates standing in pposition. This is a democratic right which we hope every person eligible to vote will exercise.

At times the council is a choice target for brick bats, and we must confess we've thrown a few. But praise must be given when praise is due, and we feel that in the last three years our present council has accomplished much. On the next four pages we have endeavoured to show some of the council's achievements. Many we cannot show, for they are hidden to the eye. Others are very apparent. For example, the new ' council buildings, the Maitai water supply scheme, the many miles of roads which have been formed and sealed. We feel that the council is to be congratulated on its work over the last three years and are confident that if the next council accomplishes as much, then Nelson will I continue to progress with the same rapidity as it has seen since the I last local body elections.

Neale Park was tile drained and floodlights installed and another park to receive considerable attention was Greenmeadows at Stoke where the whole playing area was relaid.

In Nayland Road the council pursued its policy of providing flats for pensioners (both single and double units) and this policy is deserving of the highest praise.
