Nelson Commentary

The Piggery and the Park

×

A little inconsistency by the city council at the last council meeting, we thought. In one breath the council decided to warn Seabrook By-Products Ltd., to eradicate what are considered offensive smells, and with the next breath it talked about erecting advertising signs at Trafalgar Park – in our view, offences to the eye. Certainly there have been occasions when the air around the airport has caused the nose to twitch, and on health grounds we find no quarrel with the council on its decision. But we do not feel that the erection of what amount to hoardings at Trafalgar Park will enhance the beauty of our main ground. The erection of hoardings in Nelson is rigidly controlled by by-law. The signs might bring in £1000 of revenue, but the ground itself will be cheapened, in our estimation. Below is a picture of Trafalgar Park as it is today, and below that again, a view of another park on which advertising signs have been erected. What do you think?
