Rangi On Reef

The two-man crew of the Nelson trawler, Rangi, Olliver Gausel and Brian Coppell, got the fright of their lives when Rangi hit the Bark Bay reef (between Torrent Bay and Tonga) last month. The mishap happened with the tide on the ebb and at one stage, at low tide, Rangi was right over on her side. It was then that her hull was breached by rock in two places and only mattress shoring and two canvas and timber patches outside, enabled the vessel to reach home. Heavy-duty pumps were taken to her by speedboat to keep her afloat.
