Gorse Fire Menaces Homes

×

Homes in Toi Toi Street came close to being engulfed in the flames of a gorse fire which started at the southern end of princes Drive last month and swept down the gorse-covered hillside. Only the untiring efforts of firemen from Nelson and Stoke who contained the fire as it neared the settled area, prevented a major conflagration. The fire commenced close to the roadway on Princes Drive in still conditions, early in the afternoon, but a southerly wind change sent the blaze roaring across a 300 yard front down the valley. The picture here was taken in Toi Toi Street shortly after 6pm when the fire had reached a critical stage.
