Commentary On Nelson

With this Issue we commence what will be a regular feature of "Photo News" – a commentary on events in and around Nelson. In some respects. this page, or pages, can' be likened to a newspaper's leading articles and the opinions expressed will be ours. We have no intention of "sniping" at local bodies or other organisations, but at the same time, if we feel a criticism is called for we will not hesitate to make one. By the same token, when we know of occasions where bouquets should be extended, we will be pleased to do so.

The Trafalgar Hotel may have to be sold if the commission insists upon it being brought up to what many consider to be an unusually high standard. Improvements, if insisted upon, would prove so costly that the building might have to be sold. Nelson can ill-afford to lose the hotel accommodation provided by this big hotel.

While hotels are still news, we also extend our congratulations to the City Council for its belated decision to recommend to the commission a licence for the Tahuna area. Our only regret is that this important step was not taken long before

On this page we print the photographs of two well-known Nelson district hostelries – the Tophouse and Trafalgar Hotels. Both were in the news lately during the visit to Nelson of the Licensing Control Commission. We agree wholeheartedly with the Nelson Historical Society that the Tophouse Hotel, as one of New Zealand's fast-disappearing relics of the past, should be preserved and not, as it would appear the Commission has been asked to do, be dispensed with or rebuilt to the stage where the original building would lose its attraction as a link with Nelson's past history. For that reason we congratulate the society for its efforts to preserve the building and to launch a fund to have it renovated and restored.

Not that long ago many justifiable criticisms were being levelled at the city council for the state of the city roads. There are still areas where roading is not particularly good, but to a large extent the criticisms have been stilled by the great growth in roading works being affected. The new Haven Roads (above) are now a credit to the city and a delight to drive on and so also, we feel sure, will be the new Washington Road, which was being constructed as this went to press. Well done, Council!
