Logs For Japan

Shipments of logs to Japan from Port Nelson are made periodically and so seldom attract headlines. The latest shipment to leave, however, is unusual in that all the logs have come off the Grampians, alongside the Flashmore Reserve, behind Braemar Hospital. The stand of 24 acres of trees has been logged by the Valetta Timber Co, of Hope, and in the last 4½ months company employees have logged about 1,700,000 super ft of timber (about 9000 logs). The growing area is an extremely steep one and the work of felling and transporting the logs to the dump has been both arduous and difficult. Some idea of the difficulties involved can be seen from the photographs reproduced in this and the next three pages.

A study in contrasts - insignificant man dwarfed by the giant trees which he can tumble to earth in a few minutes

Down the steep track the logs are snigged by dozer to the main dump.

The hillside, shorn of its trees, looks very bare today.
