Traffic Lights Bring Order Out Of Chaos
Not all motorists and pedestrians in Nelson have welcomed the new traffic lights on the Trafalgar Street-Bridge Street intersection, but most will admit one fact -that the coming of the lights has brought order out of chaos. Remember the Friday nights with cars piled up for sometimes as much as 100 yards while pedestrians wandered across the crossings? And the confusing situations which occurred at peak traffic hours? Well, they're gone, and in their place we have a system which gives everyone a fair go.
No more situations like this, with turning cars and through traffic and pedestrians together
Or like this, where a pedestrian can hold up a line of traffic
Pedestrians have their turn, using the crossings or crossing diagonally.
"Hullo, this looks new what does it say?"
"Traffic lights, and I have to wait"
But somebody's not waiting

Technicians from Wellington installed the equipment, the brain of which is contained in this box.
Pads in the road also actuate the lights
Cars lined up to use the crossing shortly after the lights were officially opened
All traffic stops and pedestrians can cross in safety
Delegates at the Ghb grocery conference came down to see the official opening
