New Quarters For Post Office Savings Bank

×

When the Post Office Savings Bank first moved into its quarters in the old post office building many years ago there was no great crowding problem. But with the passing of the years, the development of Nelson and the growth of business being transacted by the savings bank, the staff soon outgrew its accommodation and it became imperative to find more space for the bank. The answer is the new two-storey block adjoining the chief post office. The building was opened officially by Mr Scott, Postmaster General, earlier this month. The ground floor of the £60,000 building is occupied almost exclusively by the savings bank. The telephone branch (downstairs) and offices of the engineering department (upstairs) also have more airy quarters and the public will benefit enormously by not having to climb that mountainous stairway to pay their telephone accounts. The public will henceforth benefit also from the new teller-ledger system which enables a teller to check signatures and passbooks and make deposits and withdrawals at the one window. The pics of the building and its interior were taken shortly before the building was officially opened.
