The Isolation Of Stephen's Island

Not far from the top of D'Urville Island three families lead a pretty isolated existence - isolated, that is, except for the radio telephone which links their home, Stephen's Island, with the outside world. Recently, three Nelson Post and Telegraph Department technicians, Peter McGregor, Derek Hogan and Brian McIntyre, carried out maintenance work on the radio gear, and while there Derek took these pics. The island is used mainly as a lighthouse station, but from it also comes constant weather information. It is best known, however, as one of the last homes of the tuatara lizard.

The only means of entering and leaving the island unless you're a mountain goat, is by this landing block.
