Cassino - 20 Years Back

×

On May 18, 20 years ago, German troops which had fought furiously and for some time successfully to hold off countless attacks by allied troops, were finally beaten. Cassino has gone down in history books as tone of the bloodiest affrays in the Second World War. Ask any New Zea-lander who was there. Nelson returned men who fought there will have their memories jogged by this pic. We apologise for its poor reproduc-tion. We copied it from a photograph in the "Stars and Stripes". The caption on the pic said that it was taken as Fifth Army artillery was shelling the mount. At that stage the monastery at the summit was in-tact. It was sent in to us by John Neal, of Blenheim.
