Anzac Day, 1964

The 49th anniversary of the storming of the hills of Gallipoli, which gave birth to the Anzacs, was commemorated throughout the Nelson province on April 25, a Saturday. The morning was devoted to honouring the Dominion's dead, but in the afternoon winter sports were played. This was the first occasion on which permission has been given for sporting fixtures to be played on Anzac Day, and judging by the comment throughout New Zealand, it would appear as if a change in the hitherto solemn observance of the day is destined for the future. The weather in the province for the day was beautifully fine and all services were well-attended.
