Thrilling Concert

All too seldom do we in the South Island have the opportunity of seeing and hearing the beautiful poi dances and songs of the Maori. Such a chance came our way recently, however, when Benny Levin brought the Rotorua Whaka Maori Concert Party to Nelson shortly after its return from Australia. The perfect rhythm and graceful movements of the poi dancers and the wonderful harmony of the singers delighted a near-capacity crowd.

A little bit of nonsense

Mrs Kahu Morrison, Howard's mother, has a beautiful voice.

The stick game, a test of agility and a case where the quickness of the hand can't afford to be deceived by the eye.

Maureen's husband, John Waaka, shows just how wild he could get if his meals weren't ready on time.

One of the highlights of the show: Del Poratema's dexterous handling of the quadruple poi - a tremendous effort.

Leader of the party, Guide Kiri, obviously enjoys this takeoff of the men's haka.
