Fish for the World

Fish, and fishing in Nelson waters in particular, made New Zealand-wide headlines last month during the shake-down visit in New Zealand waters of the big Rumanian fish factory Constanta, and the news that Japanese interests wanted to buy into Nelson fishing.

Fish can be big business, judging from the activities of Nelson Fisheries, one of the biggest such companies in New Zealand, To such places as Australia, America, and Central Europe, the company annually exports hundreds of tons of fresh and shell fish. From the 50 boats in service from Greymouth to the North Island the fish comes in to be processed and then shipped to other parts of New Zealand or overseas. This company is unique in that it ensures that the quality of the fish is retained by observing a rigid packing and processing technique. The fish are gilled and gutted at sea and packed in boxes in the freezer on the trawler, On arrival at the depot it is taken immediately to a cooling chamber where it stays until ready for the processing table.
