A Regiment Passes
The Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Regiment, like the old soldiers, has "simply faded away". The regiment lost its 119-year-old identity recently when military districts were reorganised and was combined with the 1st Canterbury Regiment to form the 2nd Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. The regiment has had a long and proud history and its passing is tinged with sadness. However, progress cannot be halted. On these two pages we have endeavoured to publicise some of the efforts of the regiment, from the year 1842 when news of the Wairau massacre caused the formation of a unit and Church Hill was turned into a redoubt, to the present day.
