Tahunanui School's Golden Jubilee

Former pupils from all over New Zealand - more than 500 of them - converged on Tahunanui School on the weekend of March 7, to celebrate the school's golden jubilee. It was a wonderful weekend, especially for many of the older generation, many of whom had not met their friends living in other parts of the country for many years. So it was that throughout the weekend, many conversations comnenced: "D' you remember so-and-so," or "remember the day that..." As the picture at left shows, the school has grown a great deal since it was opened first in 1908. At that time it served an area of 12 houses and in 1914 it became the Tahunanui School, Today the population of the area is 2900. The celebrations included a parade to the site of the old school, a roll call from 1908-10, afternoon tea, a social, banquet and a church parade on the Sunday.
