Fifteen-year-old Kevin Barron, of Takaka, rescued a small girl from drowning at Picton in 1958. For this act of bravery Lord Cobham presented him with the Boy Scout Association's gilt cross. He is seen here after the presentation with his father, Canon B. D. Jamieson, district commissioner of Scouts, and his scout-master at the time, Mr J. Normington, of Motupipi. At middle right Kevin displays his awards.
