In Defence of the Hawke Cup

Up to the time of the match against Manawatu, a match we were unable to cover for this issue, Nelson had repulsed 11 challenges for the Hawke Cup, three of them this season. Taranaki was disposed of in a fraction under two full days in a nine-wicket victory; Marlborough suffered a like fate, this game also finishing on the second day for a 10-wicket win, and Waikato lost on the first innings when it could not reach the Nelson first innings total of 431. feature ot this game was Nelson captain Dave Spence's 151, his first in Hawke Cup cricket.
