Baccy for Englnda

×

From the deck of the Australia Star which visited Nelson last month, we photographed the arrival at the port of a very important convoy. On board those trucks on the wharf is the first shipment of leaf tobacco ever exported from New Zealand. The tobacco, of course, was grown in the Motueka district and was being shipped by Messrs W. D. AND H. O. Wilis Ltd to the British American Tobacco Company, Liverpool. The occasion was a notable one not only for the fact that it was the first shipment, but because it could well be the forerunner to an annual contract that could boost our overseas earnings. This shipment, of 220,000 lbs of leaf, is valued at about £54,000. It will be used for blending with other tobacco. To obtain the order, the company negotiated with the British firm for nearly 12 months. British buyers had earlier received samples or the leaf and were much impressed with its qualities.

The picture at left, of the trucks in convoy travelling towards the port, was taken through the rose archway on the property of Mr P. Moncrieff.
