Boys' Brigade Relay

To mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Boys' Brigade, more than 100 boys of the brigade in the West Coast, Golden Bay, Nelson and Marlborough areas carried a message of loyalty by relay from Hokltika to Wellington - a distance of more than 280 miles. The message was handed to the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson. One of the changeover points was at Nelson, where, at the Church Steps, a new team of runners took the message baton on the next stage of its journey. Before leaving Nelson, however, the Mayor (Mr B. N. Strawbridge) read the message aloud and wished the brigade well.
