Diverging Views on the Nelson Railway

×

At the invitation of the Nelson Progress League, the Member of Parliament for Marlborough (Mr T. P. Shand) attended a recent meeting of the league to elaborate on his reasons for opposing the rail link between Nelson and Blenheim. The main speaker for the league was Mr L. E. H. Baigent (top left), who backed his arguments with an imposing list of statistics. Mr Shand then gave his views and replied to points put by Mr Baigent. He considered it would be a "tragedy" to spend large sums on the proposed rail link. It was hoped to conclude the meeting at 4.30 p.m. but so many were the Questions and views expressed that the closure was not applied until 5.30 p.m. Above, Mr Baigent is speaking. Others, from left to right are Mr F. J. Lock (immediate past president of league), Mr Shand, Mr R. C. Lawry (the league's current president) and Mr C. V. Neale (league secretary). Below, Mr Shand answers a point raised by Mr Lawry.
