New Hospital Block Opened By Governor-General

×

The George Manson block, £715,000 worth of hospital wards, operating theatres, administrative offices and X-Ray and physiotherapy units, was officially opened by the Governor-General (Lord Cobham) early last month. The new block increases the bed accommodation to 146 through the provision of five wards, all fully-equipped with the latest in fittings. Next month the hospital board hopes to bring the new £166,000 boiler house into commission, thereby completing a building programme which has cost £1,359,000. The magnificent new nurses' home cost £477,000. And what of the future? The board has its eye on a new maternity block to be erected opposite the hospital.

Before the opening ceremony the Governor-General and his Aide, Captain D. H. Blundell-Hollishead-Blun-dell were shown round the hospital.

During his opening address, Lord Cobham made a comparison of New Zealand and British hospitals. His feelings, he said, were "pride tinged with envy".

The official party in the children's ward
As a father himself, it was natural that the Governor-General should spend most of his time looking round the hospital in the children's wards. His easy manner quickly put the children at ease and many were the smiles he received from the small patients.
