City Abattoir in the News

What is to happen to Nelson's city abattoir? That was the question that was being asked by city councillors, butchers and the Nelson Freezing Company following the council's discussions on the propriety of abandoning the abattoir and delegating the abattoir authority to either the freezing company or the butchers. It has been reported that the cost of providing chilling chambers and suitable effluent treating plant at the abattoir would cost over £75,000, and council is very much aware that the abattoir uses 40 acres of land that could be used for industrial development. When this issue went to press the matter was still under consideration
