They Saw for Themselves

Newspapers often carry stories of critical statements made by organisations and individuals on a variety of subjects, and quite often these criticisms have been based on lack of information or knowledge of conditions. In recent months, the apple and pear industry has been a target for some of these criticisms, so the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board hit upon the very sensible solution of showing some women's organisations behind the scenes. So it was that delegates from the consumers' and housewives' associations from outside Nelson were the guests of growers in the Nelson district and the board, for a few days last month. They saw the crops picked, sorted, and packed, and then, upon return to Nelson were shown over the fruit juice factory at Stoke and the cool store on McOlashen Quay. They left Nelson with a much clearer appreciation of the difficulties besetting the growers and the board.
