Hop Picking by Machine

While a lot of hops are still picked by hand, a lot of others are being stripped from the vines by machine. Several hop growers in the Motueka and Riwaka areas have in stalled such machines and all praise them highly. Labour is still required but the labour force is smaller and the actual picking, much faster and cleaner. The pics at top left and bottom left were taken at the Rowling Bros property, Riwaka, and the other two at the Eric Rowell property, Motueka.

A slightly different method is employed at Rowell's property, the vines being cut and wound on to poles ready for stripping
