A Loss To Education

In the field of education, Nelson lost one of its greatest personalities at the end of 1961, with the retirement of Miss Betsy Walter, Who doesn't know, respect and admire this cheerful woman who laboured for 33 years to educate the children of New Zealand? She will be missed at Auckland Point School where for the last 19 years she has taught, 11 of them as infant mistress. Upon her retirement she was honoured by the Auckland Point Home and School Association and school committee at a function which drew more than 200 to the Oddfellows hall. Here she was made a presentation of a beautiful engraved wristlet watch and a barometer, the latter from her Maori friends. But Nelson hasn't lost Betsy, She retains her post as deputy Mayor and after her marriage on January 27 to Mr J. Eyre in Wellington, she will return to Nelson to live.
