Carols By Candlelight

×

A very strong wind whipping off the Waimea Plains and a lot of traffic noise on Rocks Road spoilt the 1961 Christmas venture of holding the Carols by Candlelight service on Haulashore Island. About 130 choristers were taken to the island on Mr J.Guard's launch, Gleam, where special pontoons had been law to take them ashore. Thousands of Nelsonians and visitors gathered on the foreshore for the service, but reception was not the best. This picture shows the small candlelit group on the island and some of the listeners on the foreshore. (Peter Cooper)
