Building Boom in Nelson

The building industry is enjoying a nationwide boom and, in Nelson, builders are flat out. In all sectors — private, commercial and industrial — millions of dollars are being spent on building. Building permits of over one million dollars were issued for August and September, and these do not take into account constructions started previously. Although builders are happy about the situation, there is also some apprehension. Booms don't last forever. If the current trend levels to a steady rate, fair enough. Let's hope it is not followed by a recess. Some of the larger jobs in progress are: The Rutherford, $3½ million; Nelson Hospital Clinical Services block, $2 million; Richmond shopping complex, $500,000; Trafalgar Centre, $380,000; Catchment Board Office, $112,000; Amp Building, $117,000; and Nelson College classroom block, $200,000. These are just a few of large construction jobs being tackled at present.
