Nelson College has been involved in a few disasters in its time. This historic photo shows the old wooden building ablaze, on December 7, 1904. The destroyed building was rebuilt in stone, only to be devastated by the Murchison earthquake of 1929. It was again rebuilt and is still here

The Anchor Company's passenger ship 'Arahura' enters Port Nelson, earlier in the century. The 'Arahura' and the 'Matangi' operated a daily passenger service between Nelson and Wellington. The 'Arahura' could accommodate 200 passengers for the night trip and about twice that number for day sailings. which were included during the busier Christmas periods. She went out of service in 1949 and then, in January, 1952, was used for target practice by R.N.Z.A.F. Mosquitoes and sunk in Cook Strait
