Tremendous Reception For Nelson's Olympians
Thousands of people afforded Olympians Rodney Dixon and Jeff Rackley a magnificent return from the Munich Olympic Games. Dixon lifted New Zealand middle distance running to a new peak with his bronze medal in the 1500 metres. His time of 3min 37.5sec was a New Zealand record, eclipsing Peter Snell's mark by one-tenth of a second. Rackley, Nelson's 1972 Sportsman of the Year, was unlucky to strike a tough opponent in the first round of the welterweight boxing. The West German who beat him was eventually put out by the gold medal winner from Cuba.
Official speakers at the reception said they could not remember a larger crowd at the Church Steps.
