Rival Retain Ward Shield
In a try-less match Rival retained the Jack Ward Shield, an annual event between that club and Nelson, when it scored a 15-9 win. In the first half, Nelson backs showed considerable enterprise with clever switches of play and it appeared points would come from this endeavour. Bad handling contributed to lack of finish to Nelson's moves and the second half was Rival's. Highlights of the game were the long dropped goals by Rival's fullback Ian Jaspers, and Nelson's first five-eighth Merrin Hodgson. Rival led 9-6 at halftime.
