Built in 1866, the Royal Hotel was rebuilt and modernised in 1914 and 1931. Female quarters for staff employed at the Rutherford will be established here. About five times the staff as employed by the four pubs to be closed will be needed to run The Rutherford

The Central Hotel will be sold for other commercial develop­ment. It was probably built in the 1860s and was formerly called the Coach and Horses. It was modernised in the 1920s

The Panama Hotel was first licensed as the Miners Arms in 1859 and was a popular rendezvous for miners from the Dun Mountain Copper mine. When the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade had its headquarters in Hardy Street, firemen used to patronise the pub after attending fires. The Panama might be converted to tourist flats

Mrs Doris Stuck, the licensee, and her son, Brian Mercer, have run the hotel for five years since Mrs Stuck's first husband died. They have been associated with the hotel for nine years
