Our Cover

No. 130-21 August 1971

At the time of writing the Nelson United soccer team was running second, after a successful start, in the Central League first division. Our photograph shows the team just before they boarded a flight to Wellington. Unfortunately the director of coaching, Gwyn Evans, was not available for the photo. The team, from the top: Jack Woodfine, Chris Jones and Phil Balcombe, Errol Rush and Trevor Thomson, Les Hyland and Bruce Thomson, David Brydon and Willie Carr. Front: Bill White (manager), Eddie Wilson, Brian Nichols, Stan Kett (masseur) Steve Shaw (captain), John Kroon and Bill Campbell, who was coach when the photo was taken. Since then Bill has had to resign from the position because of illness. United won a string of early matches but then lost form and will probably finish second to Waterside, Wellington.

Back Cover. No one seems to know how this old cart got under the overhead bridge near AnnesbrooK Drive, but with the sun backlighting the trees and streaming under the bridge, it made an attractive picture. Last month's back cover was not, as we stated, the above, but of course a silhouette sunset of Arrow Rock, with the golden water of Tasman Bay contrasting the dark outline of the Tasman Range.
