Looking down on to the Picton ferry terminal. At left is the land reclaimed and in the middle of this area a transporter park will be made. The existing terminal, with the Aramoana departing, can be seen near the middle of the photograph. The No.2 terminal will be between that and the Waitohi Wharf alongside which are two ships

A plan of the terminal showing two ferries docked. Joining the No.2 terminal is the road overpass from the transporter park. (Both pictures by Barry Simpson).

This 69ft rail linkspan looks big but imagine the other one to be attached to this - it will be 91ft long. The structure in the photograph weighs 36 tons. The far end will be hinged to solid abutments on the shore and the 91ft span will be injointed to the near end. The 91ft span will be a flexible structure to allow for the roll of the ferry. The hinges and pinjoints will allow the spans incline to be altered with the tide

×

Hard at work on the 69ft span are Jack Steyn, Ken Cudahy and Rex Fisher

×

Mr Len Martin, the works supervisor, points out how the transoms for the 91ft span will be pinjointed to allow for movement of the ferry

×

And here are three of the steel pins which will form an insignificant, in size, but vital in responsibility, role in the project. They will join the transoms

Working in conjunction on the project is the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co. Ltd where the machining is being done. Here Claude Worley keeps a careful eye on the drilling of pinjoint holes in a transom
