Progress on the Picton Project

Delivery of the rail linkspans being made by the Nelson firm, Dorman Engineering Ltd, for the new Picton ferry terminal will start at the end of September.

The Nelson firm, which won the $250, 000 contract, is making two rail linkspans for the new No.2 terminal; two for the existing terminal; one road overpass linkspan for the No.2 terminal and one fixed span for the road overpass.

In addition, the steel structures for the lifting towers to house the lifting gear to raise and lower the linkspans are being made by Dorman Engineering.

Transporting this 54ft lifting tower poses problems. But nothing which can't be solved. Weighing about 16 tons the towers (the second is in the background) are 19ft wide. They will be transported to Picton by road lying flat on a truck. But because the Pelorus Bridge is narrower than 19ft the towers will have to be raised on to their edges, taken over the bridge and then reloaded on the other side. A crane will be used for this task
