Winner of the New Zealand open side drum championship at Wanganui was Barry Winter, 18, son of Mr and Mrs E. Winter. Barry also won the junior championship in 1969, the only time it was held. He has been drumming for about five years and was originally tutored by a former national champion, the late W.A. Gomas. Barry is a member of the Nelson Municipal Band and is also in the National Youth Band
