National League, 1972?
Our heading has a strong possibility. Nelson United, winner of the Central League second division soccer championship last season is sweeping to a similar goal in the first division. After that lies a four-way play-off for National League status. United has the administrators and coaches, and the players are proving that they have the ability to reach the top. The photographs on this page were taken when United beat Wellington Diamond United 4-1.
Ace goal scorer Phil Balcombe slips the ball past Diamond's keeper to make it 4-1
It's not uncommon to see Jack Woodfine high in the air and using his head to the utmost
The disconsolate keeper, caught wrong footed by Balcombe, picks himself up off the ground
Nelson United captain Steve Shaw shoots a pass away under pressure
Chris Jones darts between two Diamond players to clear his pass
Into the air again is Jack Woodfine (No. 5)
