Inter-Island Rugby at Nelson
Very close marking in the backs, many fundamental errors and a lack of cohesion on both sides combined to make the inter-island Rugby match played on Trafalgar Park a fairly drab affair. The crowd of about 4500 seldom reached simmering point and the score of 11-6 in North Island's favour is indicative of the tight marking which characterised the 62nd encounter between the islands. Only six of the 17 points came from tries - both scored by the North Island. This was the first time an inter-island match has been played in Nelson - a bonus for having started Rugby in New Zealand at Nelson 100 years before.
A panoramic view of Trafalgar Park in splendid order notwithstanding torrential rain the day and night before.
Nelson-Bay's Terry Julian displays the form which won him a place in the South side, with this excellent two-handed take.
North Island centre Mick O'Callaghan is unceremoniously dumped by his opposite, Phil Gard.

North second five-eighths, Joe Morgan, makes one of the many driving runs which characterised his play (outside him is left wing Vern Winitana).
