Nelson Bays Retain Seddon Shield

Nelson Bays, after an uncertain first half, found its feet and swept away to a 22-6 win over Buller, the first of this season's Seddon Shield challengers. Buller commenced the game strongly, and an agile forward pack, aided by some extremely fine kicking by fullback G. Hart, kept Nelson short of scoring opportunities. In this period Buller scored its six points. But the Bays side began to consolidate and by mid-way through the second half was pressuring Buller into errors and creating opportunities for itself. The game finished on a stirring note, with one of the finest winger's tries the writer has ever seen. Right wing Terry Mitchell took the ball well inside his own half, beat his marker, the cover defence, and by a nice mixture of footwork, swerving and change of pace completely bamboozled the opposition to score under the posts. The three pictures Above show part of his fine scoring run.

Buller supporters added a note (musical) of colour and excitement to the occasion with their vociferous support of their side (local followers, as usual, remained fairly quiet).

When a back movement was halted close to the Buffer line, captain Calvin Cochrane was quickly on the scene as was Terry Mitchell and from this phase John Chadwick scored for the blue and whites.
