Suburban Club Opened

Not much more than a year ago a group of Nelson men saw a need in the city for a cosmopolitan, or workingmen's club-type of club. They found tremendous support for their views at meetings held with the object of commencing such a club, and their hopes and plans reached fruition last month when the doors of the club were opened for business. A home for the club was the biggest obstacle confronting the committee, but it was fortunate in obtaining a lease of the office premises of Zip Wholesalers on Tahunanui Drive. Within this building is a main bar, a lounge bar, a ladies' lounge, television room, billiards room, darts room and offices. The Licensing Control Commission, when granting the club a licence, put an arbitrary figure of 600 on membership (550 men and 50 women). At a later stage, when the club is firmly established, it is hoped to proceed with the original proposals for a building complex on a site to be chosen. Until then, the Suburban Club has a comfortable home.
