Seatrans 50-Mile road Cycling Race

The Nelson cyclist, Bryan Shaw, came within an ace of winning the annual 50-mile Nelson open road cycling race sponsored by Seatrans, at the beginning of the month. Shaw, with Steve Sanford (Christchurch) overtook the 31, 23 and 20 min handicap riders and, out in front, looked set to win. However, Lionel Manners of Christchurch had saved something for the sprint home and in a final effort passed Shaw with just 40 yards to go. Manner was off the 23 min mark. Conditions for the race were superb - no wind and comfortably warm. The ride of the day was provided by former Olympic representative, Neil Lyster of Petone, who set a new record time for the ride to Belgrove and return. He broke the old record by 3 mins and 4 secs..
