A barge loaded with two trucks and drilling equipment was towed out of port by the Harbour Board's tug, Wakatu, to Saxton's Island. There the Nelson Catchment Board is carrying out drilling tests in a search for artesian water supplies for the Waimea Plains.

The board's pile-driving pontoon which has given valuable service to the board, gets a new steel deck. The old decking, part of which can be seen Below Right, was paper thin in parts.

New decking, to be concreted, is being laid on the No. 1 wharf. It will replace decking laid in 1906.
