The Great Trek North

The Nelson College authorities have long recognised the need for a filtration plant for the college swimming pool. There was only one obstacle to be overcome in buying it - money. Adopting the self-help policy, the college, masters and pupils, decided to raise the money with a sponsored trek. Two courses were available. One was from Hope (over 12 miles) and the other in Nelson (of about two miles). And so, at the end of last month, almost 800 boys and staff set out to raise the wind. The plant is to cost about $5000 (gold washers, we hear). The trek did in fact produce about $3500 and with the Education Department providing a $1000 subsidy the college is almost out of the red.

College head Mr Brewster was a walking ad for Mercury (and it cost the sponsors plenty). He was sponsored to the extent of $40 to $50 a mile.
