Landmark Disappears

Atawhai residents lost a landmark recently with the felling of an old bluegum tree in Atawhai Crescent. The tree, planted about 1882, at about the time Dr. Gipps built his home "La Fontaine" at Atawhai, was proving a danger to high tension power lines running underneath some of the big dying limbs. Members of the Waimea Electric Power Board's bush gang felled the tree with a minimum of fuss and bother. Above - A view of the tree with the homestead in the background.
