Rex Wells of Takaka was fortunate to escape with bruises when the truck he was driving to Takaka left the road and rolled down the hill a mile from the foot of the Takaka Hill road, at Upper Takaka. The truck, loaded with gypsum, rolled 60ft down the hillside before it was stopped by a rock outcrop. The pix here show the truck on its side (LEFT), its recovery (BELOW) and Pat McKinley making preparations for its recovery.

This tree-covered City Council reserve on the corner of Watson Street and Washington Road is the subject of a petition to the Council. Residents using Watson Street and those using the walk to Quebec Road are asking for the reserve to be cleared. They say it has become the night haunt for parties, that it is littered with bottles and rubbish, and that women in particular are frightened to walk past it at night.
