Times are Changing

Nelson's Chief Post Office, hub of the town's communications system since 1905, is to be demolished. The old building, with its distinctive tower and clock, is showing its age and the effects of two major earthquakes during its lifetime. It now lies empty, but the work of the department goes on at the former Burns Philp premises a few yards further along Halifax Street. Our pic Above shows the old and the new. At the time of going to press the date for the commencement of the demolition of the building was not known.

Behind barricaded doors, George Ferris, a cable jointer, works on removing one of the building's very old telegraph cables.

The foyer of the department's temporary home is very pleasing, with one wall taken up completely by private boxes.

The telegraph section is now located in part of the new building being erected in the Post Office yards off Haven Road and here Garth Simpson and Bill Hitchcock carry on the good work.

The old tower-we'll be sorry to see it go

As we went to press, these 60 minute signs were still in force outside the new building-time they were changed to 10 min.

One question which has occupied a good section of the community since the announcement of the impending demolition was made is what is to happen to the clock in the tower? The clock itself is owned by the City Council, and the Council is to ask the Post Office to incorporate a tower in the new building to house the clock. It is to be hoped this is possible. If it is not, the Council may want to consider the erection of a clock tower similar to those at Gis-borne or Blenheim. BELOW, we have superimposed a picture of the Gisborne clock tower in the middle of Trafalgar Street as a suggested location should the Council wish to proceed with such a scheme.
