Centennial Day Rugby

Nelson Bays began the second century of rugby football in New Zealand in heartening style. At Motueka's Rugby Park, the Nelson Bays team held on to a slender 6-3 margin to beat the touring Poverty Bay side. This was a match which the visitors could possibly have won, but possession was frittered away by kicking, and towards the end of the game when Poverty Bay was rampant, by individual rather than team effort. For all that, Nelson Bays were magnificent on defence in the second half, and, for a time, were as much on top as Poverty Bay was in the latter part of the second half. Nelson Bays scored two tries to Poverty Bay's penalty goal.
