K. Factory to Close

It Could Have Been Here!

The biggest disappointment, however, is that Nelson could have been the site for this big new factory for the firm. We have been told by the local factory manager (Mr S. Thompson), that before a decision was made to build in Christchurch, a comprehensive survey of Nelson was undertaken by the firm. What tipped the balance in favour of Christchurch was the insufficient quality of suitable land in the Nelson district for growing the crops required by the firm. Our Member of Parliament, Mr Whitehead, after a visit to Sir James Wattie, has said that if "sufficient" supplies of fish were forthcoming, the Nelson plant could still be worked at an economic level. But how much is "sufficient"? And if these "sufficient" supplies of fish are obtainable, would not the factory still have to be upgraded to meet the food and hygiene regulations? Our view is that Kirkpatricks will be phased out by the end of the year. But, we would dearly love to be proved wrong.

Queen's Gardens And The Ducks

A correspondent to the "Mail" recently criticised the Council for wanting to spend $1000 on lights in the Queen's Gardens during the holiday season. He felt the money could be better spent on improving the gardens, and by cleaning up the filth left by the ducks on the paths. On this last point we heartily agree. The filth is everywhere - the smell offensive. Certainly not a tourist attraction. Our pic at Left gives some idea of the mess on the path.
