Maitai Four Wins Tournament

If a racing commentator had been present at the Nelson Bowling Club's green, he would undoubtedly have used the expression "neck and neck, stride for stride" on numerous occasions. For that's the way the final of the tournament went. Morrison's Tawa Services team went into an early lead but Frank Oakly's Maitai four closed the gap, drew level and with the last few ends getting closer, managed to hold on to a three-point lead to win 17-14. A tremendous final. The tournament again drew bowlers from all parts of the country and the weather, although a little blowy, remained fine until almost the end of the final. This was the second successive year that Morrison's four was runnerup. Oakly's four was the same as that which won the West Coast tournament earlier this year.
