A ship entering Port Nelson through the old entrance, between Fifeshire Rock and Haulashore Island. The entrance was still in use while the new entrance was being cut through the Boulder Bank.

And here's one ship that didn't quite make it through the old entrance. The barque Lutterworth went aground while leaving the harbour. The wind dropped at a critical time and the tide carried her on to the rocks. The pic was taken early in the century. The one at top, during the 1920s.

Correspondents to the "Nelson Evening Mail" of late have been discussing the value of a salt-water swimming pool at Nelson. We thought this might interest those who have been following the correspondence. There once was a pool off Wakefield Quay, but later pulled down. We know little of its history, but would be glad to hear more from anybody in the know. Any pix to go with the information would also be welcome.

A section of the Nelson wharves. In the background can be seen the new entrance to the harbour-a much wider entrance, it would appear, than is in use today.
